Myth: Getting pregnant is easy

Fact: It will be surprising to know that getting pregnant is not just about stopping birth control pills. The woman needs to be at the top of ovulation, and the sperm needs to be active to work all the way to reach the egg to fertilise it. Even if the sperm reaches the egg, it does not guarantee that the egg will get fertilised. It depends a lot on the condition and the time.

Myth: The problem always lies with the woman

Fact: Infertility is not just a woman’s problem. Either partner could be infertile that is preventing the woman from getting pregnant. Men also face fertility issues, and there are various ways to treat them. The male partner will have to get his semen sample analysed to check the sperm count, quality and shape.

Myth: Weight Does Not affect fertility

Fact: This is a misconception. The body mass index is an important factor, and those who are overweight or underweight may have difficulty in conceiving. Overweight women may have health risks and also have a higher risk of miscarriage.

Myth: A man’s fertility is unaffected by age

Fact: This is a wrong notion that many people have. The semen quality tends to declines as a man ages. There is also an increase in DNA fragmentation. Ageing men may face problems with erectile dysfunction and decrease in sexual activity.

Myth: Breastfeeding moms cannot conceive

Fact: Relying on breastfeeding as a birth control measure is absolutely wrong. Breastfeeding does delay your periods, but it does not mean that it can stop you from getting pregnant.

Myth: Fertility treatment always leads to multiples

Fact: It was difficult to examine the quality of embryos during an IVF treatment earlier, and thus physicians would transfer multiple embryos to increase the chances of success. This used to lead to multiple births. However, with advancement in this field, there are ways in which the physicians can examine the embryo more accurately. This is done by selecting from the embryos that have reached the blastocyst stage.

Fertility issues have become very common. However, science is progressing at a fast pace in this field. There are now a lot of options that you can consider if you are facing problems in conceiving.
