How Dangerous Can High Blood Sugar Levels Be?

High blood sugar levels occur when blood sugar levels of the body are higher than required levels for optimal functioning. High blood sugar levels have immediate as well as long term complications.

Immediate health problems

-High blood sugar levels can cause diabetic ketoacidosis.

-Diabetic ketoacidosis is a life-threatening disease, in which a person’s body cells do not get the sugar required for energy generation. They start breaking down fats and produce a chemical compound called as ketones and release it in the blood. The severe form of disease results in difficulty in breathing, swelling around the brain, coma and can even cause death.

Long term health problems

If sugar levels remain elevated over a long period of time, they can cause:

-Damage is caused to the smaller blood vessels of eyes and kidneys, causing blindness, kidney failure

-Damage to larger blood vessels leads to arteriosclerosis and this can cause coronary artery disease or heart attack

-Damage is caused to nerves and results in diabetic neuropathy, which decreases the impulses across the nerves from various parts of the body to brain and can cause tingling, numbness and loss of pain sensation.

So, it is extremely important to keep sugar levels in check by sticking to the medications, following a strict dietary plan and getting blood sugar levels checked at regular intervals as advised by the doctor.
