Skincare Mistakes That Make You Look Older
Most of us follow a regular skin care routine that includes
washing, cleansing and moisturizing the face along with applying makeup. But
have you ever thought that your everyday skincare ritual can harm your skin?
Yes, simple mistakes in your skincare routine can not only increase your risk
of skin problems but also age your skin. And any visible changes in the face
and skin can very well make you look older than your original age. Hence,
skin care can not only make you look younger if appropriate care is taken but
can also make you look older if the routine is not followed properly. Here are
some of the common skincare mistakes that can age your skin.
Skincare: What Causes Skin Aging?
Just like any other organ in the body, our skin also starts to age
right from birth. But there are certain factors which can make the skin age
faster. Skin aging is a complex process that is influenced by both extrinsic and
intrinsic factors.
Intrinsic skin aging is the normal course of aging of all tissues
which is strongly associated with age. It causes roughness of the skin, fine
lines, etc. Extrinsic skin aging, as the name suggests is mainly caused by
external environmental factors. These include exposure to ultraviolet and
infrared radiation, pollution, chemicals, poor nutrition, and cigarette
smoking. It mostly leads to the formation of deeper wrinkles and pigmentary
changes. It is these extrinsic factors which can harm the skin and make you
look older. Wondering how? Read this!
Skincare Mistakes That Age You
1. Using sunscreen only during summers
Most of us think of using sunscreen only during summers and when
heading to a beach. But using it on a regular basis is good for the skin as it
prevents skin damage caused due to the harmful radiations of the sun. Moreover,
most sun damage results from everyday exposure to the ultraviolet rays rather
than occasional bursts while on vacation. Hence, dermatologists also recommend
the use of sunscreen on a daily basis as it not only prevents tanning but also
makes your skin look younger.
2. Using moisturizer only in winters
Just like most people use sunscreen only in summers, many use a
moisturizer only in winters. Moreover, most people think that moisturizer is
for those with dry skin. But this is not true. Even people who have oily skin
can use a moisturizer as it helps to retain moisture in the skin. A moisturizer
not only keeps the skin hydrated throughout the day but also helps to keep fine
lines and wrinkles away, which are the signs of skin aging. So do not repeat
this skincare mistake again!
3. Not drinking enough water
While using a moisturizer can help you to retain water in the
skin, but drinking water is also essential to keep your skin healthy, soft, and
glowing. This is because staying hydrated not only flushes out excess toxins in
the body but also keeps the skin healthy. It is also important to maintain the
fluid balance which is the key for overall health. Whatever is the season of
the year, it is important to drink at least 3-4 liters of water a day to keep
your skin healthy and young.
4. Not washing your face before going to bed
Whether you wear make up every day or not, it is advised to wash
your face twice a day to keep your skin healthy. This is because, even if
you are not wearing any make-up, you are exposed to a lot of pollutants and
dust during your course of the day, which can harm the skin. Moreover, the
accumulation of sweat and bacteria on the skin can make you more prone to
infection, which should be cleaned daily. Also, exposure to pollutants and
toxins can contribute to inflammation and lead to visible signs of aging.
Hence, make sure you wash your face with warm water and a mild cleanser to get
rid of dirt before hitting the bed. This skincare routine can help you to keep
your skin healthy and young.
5. Exfoliating too much and too often
Washing your face with water can clean the dirt and germs on the
skin but exfoliation can help to remove the dead skin cells, which make the
skin look older. But when exfoliating, remember to not go overboard as it can
cause more harm than good. Over-exfoliation can damage the skin and increase
the risk of chronic inflammation, breakouts, dryness, and pigmentation. It can
also lead to sagging of the skin, wrinkles and puffy eyes, which are signs of
aging. You can even consult a good dermatologist to know about a skincare
ritual that suits your skin and your needs.
One of the most effective skincare measures that keep your skin
healthy and prevent premature aging is to eat a balanced diet, stay hydrated,
use a topical moisturizer, apply sunscreen for protection from the sun and
avoid smoking and tobacco use.
